More Samsung DLP Questions

posted by scott on (5 years, 2 months ago)

I get a lot of questions from owners of Samsung DLP televisions with various symptoms. I'm no TV Repair expert, so I'll post some of them here and see if anyone can offer any expertise in addition to mine.

1. John asks: I replaced the color wheel last year due to the "banshee" effect in my Samsung DLP43. Have you heard of a retro kit to replace with the newer air bearing design? I wonder how the dirt stays out while air cooling the assembly?

Hey John, I haven't heard of a retro kit, and I don't know if the newer air-bearing color wheels will work. I'm guessing not. Maybe someone has tried this.

2. Ania writes: hi there - thanks for posting such good info on your blog. i'm wondering whether you'd have any idea about the problem i have with my samsung HDTV (manufactured in 2001) - it looks like the blue colour plane is all shifted so that the screen presents 2 pictures - a blue one, out of focus, behind a blurry semi-normal one. very annoying. the blue picture bends at weird angles too. not sure if that's also a colour wheel problem or not but wondering whether it's something i could fix myself? any info you could give would be fantastic. thanks!

This is one I haven't heard about Ania. I annoying to say the least. I think what I'd do first is remove the lamp and examine the color wheel. You can see part of the color wheel after removing the lamp, like in this picture:

3. I have a Samsung HLM507. It is 4 years old and I just had the sound from the TV go out. It will still roduce sound through my reciever but I have lost the ability to use the speaker on the TV. Is this an easy fix or do I need to have repairman come out to fix it?

Sorry, haven't done anything with the sound. We're getting into the realm of electronic parts instead of mechanical, so it becomes more difficult to diagnose.

4. I have a rear projection TV. Recently while we were watching it just turned off. Now it turns off and on every 2-3 seconds. There is no picture when it turn on only audio for 2-3 seconds then off again. I have had to unplug the tv to stop it from doing this. Any ideas what the problem could be. Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

It sounds like it's trying to fire up the lamp, unsuccesfully. Try removing the lamp and putting it back in. Sometimes this helps, at least temporarily. My initial suspicion is a lamp issue.

5. The picture on my 2 year old Samsung 50" DLP TV (HLN5065WX/XAA) seems to be getting darker. Is there a way to turn up the brightness or does this mean I need to replace the projector bulb? If I need to replace the bulb, what is a good price to pay, from whom, and where can I get instructions to do the replacement?

6. 42" Sony-DLP, my picture is getting darker, can this be the bulb or is my light engine at fault?

Two questions about darkening displays. I actually posted a separate entry on this as well. Hoping someone with some experience will see these and post a comment.

I have a 46" Samsung DLP, 2 yrs. old. I am trying to diagnose exactly what needs to be replaced. There is absolutely no picture, audio though, and when I plug it in it flashes LAMP. It then will turn on and off a couple times by itself until it finally shuts off for good and all 3 lights begin blinking. Now, I have replaced the lamp and this has had no effect on it. Is the ballast possibly the culprit? If not, what could be causing this?

I have a 50" Samsung DLP about 2-3 years old. It just started to have a white dot on the screen in upper left side. I took the back off and vacuumed all dust and lamp but the dot is still there. Any help??

I too have a 46" Samsung DLP that is about 2-3 years old. Trying to diagnose what is wrong as well. When you turn it on...my problem is sort of similar - no picture, audio is there, but the light flashes "LAMP" AND it makes a DEEP VIBRATING HUM sound that is very loud! The humming comes from the back left side of the tv.

Then the tv turns itself off and the Standby/Temp red light flashes with the Lamp light continuing to flash. When you try to turn it off - it doesn't - then about 2 minutes later it turns off and then on again. This repeats over and over until you unplug the crazy thing! Could this be the lamp as well as a fan??

I am having a problem removing the fan from my 56" Samsung HL-P5663W. I removed two screws but there appears to be a third one that I cannot see, or perhaps it is glued down. Either way, it won't come out and I don't want to pull too hard and break it. Any suggestions?

Burdenboy9 - If you never had a screeching noise your color wheel is probably OK. If you have the chassis slid out far enough and you hold down the cover switch while powering the set on, you should be able to see it turning 9000 rpm behind the lamp. I have replaced the screeching color wheel in my HLN5065WX and also the bulb. I now have to make a decision on what else to try. I've had a couple of people tell me it is probably the ballast but I'm skeptical. It could also be a dmd board or a power module board. I'm just about a mind to cut my losses and throw this thing in the garbage. I had a beautiful picture for about 30 hours of operation after replacing the color wheel and then the 3 lights of death came on and it won't power on. That was when I put a new bulb in it. I never even got a flash out of the new bulb.

It's ridiculous what some companies are asking for the replacement lamp modules for Samsung DLP TVs. Advanced Lamp gets $83.00 for a new lamp module where the ad company at the top of this forum is showing a "on-sale" price of $188.00.

We have a Samsung 47" DLP TV. We have had to replace the bulb twice now. After putting a new bulb the tv will still not turn on. We have unplugged the Tv and waited several minutes only to get 3 lights "lamp, timer & stand by come up. We checked the back of the TV and can not see a light coming from it. Is the lamp bad? or is there another way to restart the tv...or could something else be wrong?

Set was working fine for three years. I am now 300 hrs on the second lamp. When I power on, the color wheel does not whine up but I do have audio. No control of functions locally or by remote. The set goes into a loop of turning off and on, eventually all three led lights are flashing. After re-seating the lamp, it has started up correctly a few times but only for a minute or so before the picture craps out and it starts to power off and on again. I am not getting any bad bearing noise out of the color wheel so I am doubting that is the problem. It sounds normal when it decides to work. Anyone know what might be causing this to happen? Everything seems to be working, just not for very long...

To me it sounds like a lot of simple things like when you put the bulb in did you make sure that the power slots were connected and that you pushed it in far enough others sounds like your tv is malfunctioning, what type of surge protector did you use on your tv. Did it have power cleaner technology? I have had mine for the past 2 years and just recently had to change out my bulb. If you get the Monster surge protector with the power cleaning technology (which is the best because they were the first to come out with it)then you probably wouldn't be having these problems. The out is suppose to stay at 110v but it doesn't a lot of time if you look at the charts it will drop way below 110v and then just to catch back up it will shoot way past 110v and what most people do not realize is this is what fries electronics and computer and tv's. So make sure on your next tv purchase that you buy the Monster surge protector with power cleaner its about $99.99 plus tax.
