HP G60 Laptop review

posted by damienarlabosse on (2 years, 7 months ago)

I recently purchase a H G60 laptop for my wife as a replacement of my 6 yrs old HP laptop. This was a great deal, we got the G60 loaded with RAM (4GB) a upgraded hard drive (250GB), a CD/DVD player burner, webcam and more, all for under $500! I went with HP because i have owner a HP ZT3000 for over 6 yrs and although i had to send it back once for a video card problem and had to also changed the battery after 5yrs, this was the best laptop i ever had for the price i paid. HP has been really good with their customer service and software/driver updates have been really easy through their support website... so I started to shop there. I did look at Dell laptops too, but it was a great deal for this machine compared to other laptops on the market.

The HP G60 came with Windows Vista, which i am not crazy about, but since i do not have the proper install disc for Windows XP, it might have to stay that way (read more about this here: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista-7/577386-hp-computer-remove-vista-install.html). I am still thinking that i'd want to roll it back to Windows XP, with such a machine and a pretty solid XP, it should really work well.

The G60 is really light. I own a Apple MacBookPro and it is quite heavier than the HP. The lines of the G60 are really nice, it has a built in mouse trackpad into the frame of the laptop which avoids crumbs and other little annoying crappy things to get stuck around, like on my MBP.

The other thing that i really like is the wide keyboard which allowed the HP folks to put the keypad on the right side, very handy when typing numbers rather than the on top of the keyboard inline keys most laptops have.

The battery is really powerful, on a full charge we get almost 4-5 hours of use, which is neat.

One thing i would have differently when i ordered it would be to select an upgraded video card for a better resolution. My wife doesn't really like the fact that she has to scroll down a lot on Facebook when she did not have to before with the older HP zt3000. I have bought an upgraded video card (pretty expensive upgraded) to get an incredible high resolution ( i don't mind small fonts, i would rather see the web page on my screen and not have to scroll down) and that was really great.

I know HP just pushed a new line of laptops, but if you are looking for an inexpensive, light and really capable laptop, i would look on their site for the G60 because it's probably on sale. Just remember to upgrade to a higher resolution video card, but other than that this laptop will do everything you need and more for under $500, which is hard to beat!
