Color Wheel or Ballast?

Question

Hello,

I too have an issue with my Samsung, I been told by a cutomer rep. for Samsung that he would replace the color wheel first. But, my concern is what if its the ballast.

When it first happened I heard a pop, then color started to fade. I turned it off and turned it back on the next morning. All three lights where flashing, so naturally I bought a lamp.

after putting in the new lamp, the signal just flashed lamp as if it was coming on...started vibrating really bad and then would shut it self off and automatically try coming on again. The only way to stop it was to unplug.

What do you think? color wheel or balast, they are both exspensive and just can't afford to keep replacing parts.

Thank You

My Answer

I would say that this is your color wheel. The ballast is an electronic device that powers the lamp and has no moving parts. If that was to go, the lamp wouldn't light at all.

Also, any thing that could happen to a ballast that involves a "pop" would probably involve smoke!

The color wheel spins at thousands of RPM, so vibration makes sense to me.

So, given these symptoms, I'm going with color wheel.

Scott - you are the "color wheel king". My set has been on the dining room table for 3 weeks awaiting a replacement BP96-00674A part.

Given the frequency of the color wheel failure, can you recall anyone being successful in getting reimbursement of the part cost from Samsung - even though it's out of warranty?

    Thanks KostaJ

My Samsung Model HLN5065WX/XAA TV developed a screeching noise and my research revealed that the color wheel bearings were shot so I ordered a new color wheel and installed it. Every thing was fine, with a good picture, for a few days and about 30 hours of beautiful operation, then my wife hollered one day that the TV wouldn't turn on. I figured that now the light bulb was gone. I ordered a new bulb from Advanced Lamps and it arrived bouncing around inside a very poorly packaged box. The bulb had come loose from the 3 retainer clips that hold it in place inside the lamp module. I didn't see any broken filament inside so I turned the retainer clips into place and I installed the lamp module and powered on the TV only to experience a still-dead TV. To make a long story short, Advanced Lamps sent me another new lamp that arrived in seemingly good shape. I also installed it and powered on the TV. The dreaded 3 lights of death were once again blinking after the ballast tried firing up the lamp 3 times so my TV is still dead. I hesitate to spend any more money as I am now up to $200 for the lamp and color wheel. I could go ahead and order a new ballast and even a new dmd board but would I still end up with a dead TV after going up to another $300 in expense? What would one do if you were me? Being retired and living on a small SS income, I hate to replace parts without a correct diagnosis. I hesitate to think that any technician out there could do any better and would probably fail at doing an accurate diagnosis. I would just increase my expense and may still end up with a dead TV as I've read some real horror stories about technicians failing to do reliable repairs. I've read about DLP TV owners scraping their sets after spending hundreds of $$ in replacement parts and/or service technician expense. Very frustrated with Samsung.
