More Samsung DLP Questions

I get a lot of questions from owners of Samsung DLP televisions with various symptoms. I'm no TV Repair expert, so I'll post some of them here and see if anyone can offer any expertise in addition to mine.

1. John asks: I replaced the color wheel last year due to the "banshee" effect in my Samsung DLP43. Have you heard of a retro kit to replace with the newer air bearing design? I wonder how the dirt stays out while air cooling the assembly?

Hey John, I haven't heard of a retro kit, and I don't know if the newer air-bearing color wheels will work. I'm guessing not. Maybe someone has tried this.

2. Ania writes: hi there - thanks for posting such good info on your blog. i'm wondering whether you'd have any idea about the problem i have with my samsung HDTV (manufactured in 2001) - it looks like the blue colour plane is all shifted so that the screen presents 2 pictures - a blue one, out of focus, behind a blurry semi-normal one. very annoying. the blue picture bends at weird angles too. not sure if that's also a colour wheel problem or not but wondering whether it's something i could fix myself? any info you could give would be fantastic. thanks!

This is one I haven't heard about Ania. I annoying to say the least. I think what I'd do first is remove the lamp and examine the color wheel. You can see part of the color wheel after removing the lamp, like in this picture:

3. I have a Samsung HLM507. It is 4 years old and I just had the sound from the TV go out. It will still roduce sound through my reciever but I have lost the ability to use the speaker on the TV. Is this an easy fix or do I need to have repairman come out to fix it?

Sorry, haven't done anything with the sound. We're getting into the realm of electronic parts instead of mechanical, so it becomes more difficult to diagnose.

4. I have a rear projection TV. Recently while we were watching it just turned off. Now it turns off and on every 2-3 seconds. There is no picture when it turn on only audio for 2-3 seconds then off again. I have had to unplug the tv to stop it from doing this. Any ideas what the problem could be. Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

It sounds like it's trying to fire up the lamp, unsuccesfully. Try removing the lamp and putting it back in. Sometimes this helps, at least temporarily. My initial suspicion is a lamp issue.

5. The picture on my 2 year old Samsung 50" DLP TV (HLN5065WX/XAA) seems to be getting darker. Is there a way to turn up the brightness or does this mean I need to replace the projector bulb? If I need to replace the bulb, what is a good price to pay, from whom, and where can I get instructions to do the replacement?

6. 42" Sony-DLP, my picture is getting darker, can this be the bulb or is my light engine at fault?

Two questions about darkening displays. I actually posted a separate entry on this as well. Hoping someone with some experience will see these and post a comment.

hi, i have a samsung 43" it has started to flickering in black and white after about 90mins(before it was between 4-3hours) of viewing and then shuts off with the temp light flashing, if i shut it off before it shuts itself and try to turn it back on it cycles through about 3 times and then all 3 lights flash but if i wait about 30min it works fine for another 90mins, is this the ballast, lamp or light engin or am i just plain screwed?

thank you for your time

I have a 42" Samsung DLP TV, 2 yrs. old, exhibiting symptoms I have not seen described in the users manual. TV was on and I could not change the input source. That was the first symptom. Then, I could not turn the TV off -- either by using the remote or by pushing the LED button on the front panel. I had to unplug the TV to turn it off. Realizing the lamp was probably hot and needed to be cooled, I plugged it back in after a few minutes. The green "Lamp" LED was flashing on the front panel, but the TV will not turn on. It shouldn't be the lamp because all three LEDs would be blinking. Twelve hours later, this morning, the "Lamp" LED is still blinking and the TV will not turn on. Help?! Do I need to call a technician?

I have a 46" Samsung DLP, 2 yrs. old. I am trying to diagnose exactly what needs to be replaced. There is absolutely no picture, audio though, and when I plug it in it flashes LAMP. It then will turn on and off a couple times by itself until it finally shuts off for good and all 3 lights begin blinking. Now, I have replaced the lamp and this has had no effect on it. Is the ballast possibly the culprit? If not, what could be causing this?

I have a 50" Samsung DLP about 2-3 years old. It just started to have a white dot on the screen in upper left side. I took the back off and vacuumed all dust and lamp but the dot is still there. Any help??

I too have a 46" Samsung DLP that is about 2-3 years old. Trying to diagnose what is wrong as well. When you turn it on...my problem is sort of similar - no picture, audio is there, but the light flashes "LAMP" AND it makes a DEEP VIBRATING HUM sound that is very loud! The humming comes from the back left side of the tv.

Then the tv turns itself off and the Standby/Temp red light flashes with the Lamp light continuing to flash. When you try to turn it off - it doesn't - then about 2 minutes later it turns off and then on again. This repeats over and over until you unplug the crazy thing! Could this be the lamp as well as a fan??

I have the same exact problem as tori and clemens8081, what could this be ? TV is 22 months old so I don't think there is any warranty available. Is this the ballast out? It sounds like its calibrating or something is spinning with a "hum"

I am having a problem removing the fan from my 56" Samsung HL-P5663W. I removed two screws but there appears to be a third one that I cannot see, or perhaps it is glued down. Either way, it won't come out and I don't want to pull too hard and break it. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem as Rick Asford.
Rick, did you figure it out?
